{geni:about_me} My father, Emil Maurer, was a lawyer in Vienna, my mother, Fanny nee Rosenbaum was a housewife. I lived with my parents in Vienna till 1939 when I came as a refugee to England on a Kindertransport; my parents managed to come to UK just before the war. In 1941 I got a place at University College Nottingham, where I studied modern languages. In 1943 I married there Pavel Novak and in 1945 went with him to Czechoslovakia. I worked in Prague asa language teacher and translator till 1968 when after the Soviet invasion I left again with my family to England. I have lived since then in Newcastle upon Tyne.
