Notes for Sarah Agnes Coughlin
{geni:about_me} Agnes seems to have lived a hard life. She was born in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and her family moved to the Tipton, Indiana, area in the 1870s. Her father presumably died shortly thereafter, as her mother Penelope is listed in the 1880 census (Wildcat, Tipton, IN) alone with her five children. Penelope passed away in 1888, and her son Timothy was left in charge of the "minor children," which must have included Agnes. John Coughlinis buried in the Curtisville Cemetery with Penelope and Cornelius, so Agnes' brother may have died as a child. Agnes may have been particularly close to Tim and was surely devastated when he passed away in 1906 as a 40-year-old.Agnes married Emanuel four years later, and William was born in 1912. My grandfather William (according to my mom Linda) described Agnes as "milquetoast," and both of them were abused by Emanuel. He passed away in 1934, and William joined the armed forces during World War II. Agnes must have become sick, because Emanuel's niece Gertrude Ripberger brought Agnes to live with their family in New Castle. She passed away May 13, 1944, near age 74, while her son was fighting in Guam.
