Notes for Chava Alter
{geni:about_me} Chava married Ya'acov Alter in 1853 in Yassi, Romania. She had one
son, Nachman, and four daughters Rachael, Shlema, Baila, and Vetta.
The family moved several times, first to Braila, and then Bucharest.
In 1893-95 Nachman and his wife Rosa moved to Paris, France. They had
three children at the time. In 1900 Eva, along with Vetta and her
husband Bernard
Ginsburg, and widowed Shlema (Sabina) and her three children, left
Rumania for America. They went via Paris to visit Nachman and his
family. They were there during the Exposition of 1900.
Chava and the rest of the Alters landed in New York in 1902. They
went to live in Philadelphia (Some say that they went to Providence, RI,
as Eva's son-in-law had a brother living there.). They disliked the cold
weather there and very quickly moved to Portland, Oregon, which was
reputed to be a lush area, abundant with flowers. It was. But they
disliked the constant rain and dampness. Chava's son-in-law, Abraham
Labowitz (Beila's husband) joined them in Portland.
The family was told about another seaside town further south that was
fertile with fresh fruits and vegetables, where the weather was more
mild. So, again, they all moved arriving in Los Angeles in 1904.
Chava lived with Sabina who was a seamstress. Sabina first rented,
and then bought, for $2500.00, a house on East 1st Street between Utah
and Clarence. Sabina turned part of the house into a sewing shop. Chava
helped with the children and the house.
She died in 1907 and was buried in Beth Israel Cemetary, Los Angeles.
