Notes for Leo FREISTADT

{geni:about_me} Notes by Margo Freistadt, written 2009: Leo was my grandfather Bruno's little brother. He was born about 1900 and died around 1980. I met him only when he was very old, in the late 1970s. When he was younger, he was an athlete, and loved cross-country skiing. He is the only near relative that I know of that could explain my athleticism. Other than he and I, the whole family was very unathletic. He was also an opera fanatic; I waited in linewith him for standing room tickets at the Vienna Opera. He lived his whole life in Vienna, except he must have left during World War II, because he survived. He may have been in the part of the family that spent the war in England. His brother Latze was in England. Their older brother, Bruno, my grandfather, spent the war in Mexico. Leo was socially awkward, never married, never had a family. He would do stuff like go out in winter in Vienna in a white undershirt, when everyone else was wearing big fur coats. He didn't seem to suffer physically or even notice that he was dressed differently from other people. He was nice to the younger relatives, but he seemed to have strange, ongoing feuds with the relatives of his own generation. He retired early, maybe around age 55 or so, from a government job of some sort, maybe the Post Office.
