Robert E. Lavender, 88, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Lavender was preceded in death by his parents, [

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Thompson Lavender; one son, Richard (Sheila) Lavender of Winter Springs, FL; one daughter, Denise (Ray) Edmondson of Birmingham, AL; three grandchildren, Karen Harrison, Scott Edmondson, and David Lavender; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Robert was born in Fairfield, AL and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy in WWII. He obtained a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Alabama in 1949 and a Masters Degree in aero engineering from MIT in 1950.He worked for the Army Missile Command for about 10 years and served for a time as Deputy Director, Systems Analysis Laboratory, and later as Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory. In 1962 he transferred to NASA and worked at theMarshall Space Flight Center on the Apollo and Skylab Space Station programs. He retired in 1978.
Robert enjoyed boating, water skiing and camping during his retirement years. Along with his wife, he enjoyed six years of “full-time RV-ing”, camping all over the USA and most of Canada too. He was also a member of the Madison United Methodist Church.
