His birth record lists him as "Juda", and his full name was "Jehuda Aryeh Leib", in honor of hisdeceased paternal grandfather. When just a young boy, he moved with his father and stepmother to Obuda, Hungary (around 1794) and spent his youth there.
As a young man, Leopold Zerkowitz left Obuda and moved to Nagy Kanizsa, Zala megye, Hungary in 1817. He was a shopkeeper / tradesman ("boltos") by occupation. He is seen in the 1848 Jewish census:
