Notes for Dr. Gerson Zerkowitz
{geni:occupation} Physician
{geni:about_me} Dr. Gerson Zerkowitz (1808-1902) is sometimes confused with a younger first cousin, Gerson Lobl Zerkowitz (1820-1874) of Vienna [son of his uncle Markus Zerkowitz].
Dr. Gerson Zerkowitz was born in Leipnik, Moravia on 21 October 1808, the son of Juda Lobl [Leopold] Zerkowitz and Sara (Herlitschek). He was a well-known physician. He was ennobled by Emperor Rudolf II of Austria and resided in Prerov (Prerau), Tobitschau, and Holesov (all in Moravia), Budapest, and in Vienna. Medical practice records in Vienna state that he was born in "Olomouc, Moravia" [near Leipnik] on 18 October 1805 [error for 1808], and that he began practicing medicine on 4 June 1831.
In the autobiography of Ignaz Briess, "Schilderugen aus dem ehemaligen Ghettoleben," a certain "healer" named "Zerkowitz of Prerau" is mentioned. The use of the word "healer" suggests that Gerson did not learn his profession at auniversity.
According to Leipnik Jewish records, Gerson Zerkowitz and Jeanetta Knopfelmacher were married on 29 June 1848. A margin entry next to his birth record suggests that he died on 16 July 1902, but does not provide a location.
