Notes for Markus (Meir) Zerkowitz (Kohn-Zerkowitz)
{geni:about_me} Markus Zerkowitz moved to Leipnik with his parents between 1809 and 1816. Following the death of his father in 1822, he and his family occupied the Zerkowitz residence (household #29 in Leipnik's Jewish quarter). Later in life, he divorced his wife and went to Palestine. In 1859, Markus is listed in the marriage record of his son Michael as "Privatier in Jerusalem". It is possible that he may have returned to Moravia, but his fate after 1859 is unknown.
In the "Saenger Collection" at the R. Samson Raphael Hirsch Chair, Department of Jewish History in Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel, among the 1000 manuscripts and letters from Rabbi Hirsch to his contemporaries is a communication addressed to "MEIR SHERKOVITZ" of Moravia. Also mentioned in the letter are Meir's sons, Michael and Nathan, both merchants.
