{geni:about_me} Lewis FitzRandolph was born 1757 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, NJ, the 4th of 6 known surviving children born to Ephraim FitzRandolph and his wife, Rachel Stelle.

Lewis was the 5th Generation of FitzRandolph's in Piscataway, and grandson of Joseph FitzRandolph Jr. & Rebecca Drake. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Edward FitzRandolph (ca. 1615-1684) who left Notthinghamshire in England to come to the New World with his parents in 1630, settling in Barnstable, MA. There he married a Elizabeth Blossom and settled in Scituate, MA. In 1669 Edward FitzRandolph and his family left their Massachusettshome and settled in East Jersey, near the mouth of the Raritan river in what is today Piscataway. The descendants of Edward were many, and the family played an important role in the history of New Jersey. On his mother's side, hewas the maternal grandson of Benjamin Stelle and Mercy Hull, another family closely associated with the early settlement of Piscataway.

Lewis FitzRandolph served with Patriot cause in the American Revolution. From August through September 1783, Ens. Lewis FitzRandolph led excursions into Tory-held Staten Island capturing Justice Lake, Anthony Wright and at least adozen other Tory prisoners.

In about 1782, Lewis married Rachel Snowden; he being about 25 at the time, and she 24. They would become parents to 10 known children (5 boys/5 girls):

Lewis FitzRandolph, Sr. was widowed after 39 years of marriage when his wife died in January 1822. He survived her a little over 8 months, passing October 7, 1822 at age 65 years.

All of his children, except the youngest (Cornelia) married; and most had children. By the time his children reached maturity, most records shows the family name had separated the "Fitz" from "Randolph", and many members were found with the RANDLOPH surname only; although almost all showed a middle initial of "F".

Of the children not buried here: Eldest, Joseph FitzRandolph married Phoebe Haynes Woodruff of Newark, NJ, whose father Obadiah built Newark's First Presbyterian Church ca. 1791. They had 9 known children. He died in 1867, in NewYork, 11 years after his wife passed.

James married Sarah Kent Carman of New Brunswick and began his adult life in the printing business with his brother, David; but later started in the coal business that would be a financial legacy to his sons. Among his many positions, he served in the NJ State Legislature and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1827-1833). His son, Theodore F. Randolph would serve as Governor of New Jersey 1869-1872. He and his wife are buried in the Easton Cemetery in Northhampton County, PA.

John married Harriet Dalrymple and was a grocer in New Brunswick. Believed to have died in New Brunswick. No children were found from this marriage.

Clarissa (Clareissa) married Jacob Arnold of Piscataway. She died a widow in New York City in 1869. Both she and her husband are buried in the old Piscatawaytown Burial Grounds (now St. James Episcopal Cemetery) in Edison, NJ.

Lewis, Jr. married Abby Rogers of New Brunswick and was known to be father of 2 daughters. It is believed he died in Newark, Essex Co, NJ.
