Johanna and her husband converted to Christianity and initially avoided deportation. However, she was ultimately identified as Jewish anyway. She managed to go into hiding in Vienna just as the Nazis were on their way to arrest her. She lived in very dire circumstances for several months, and eventually died -- at age 48 -- of an illness she contracted during that period.
