{geni:about_me} Lt. Col. Aaron Shapiro (USAF Retired) Passed away July 7, 2011 at his home in San Anselmo, having lived a full and happy life. Born March 22, 1916, Lt. Col. Shapiro enlisted in the US Army in 1941. He transferred to the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was a navigator on bombing missions out of England throughout WW II. He returned to the Air Force in 1952, was shot down over N. Korea, and was a prisoner of war from Feb. '53 until Sept. '53. He remained in the Air Force until his retirement in 1974. His medals include the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross (twice), and Air Medal with 7 oak leaf clusters. He married Greta Kolisch (deceased) in Sept. 1946. He is survived by his children Susan Grant of San Rafael and Peter Shapiro of Grass Valley, his four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Memorial at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, July 17.
