Notes for Henry (Heinz) Hausner
{geni:about_me} Henry Hausner was a pioneer in powder metallurgy. After working closely with Paul Schwarzkopf (http://www.geni.com/people/Paul-Schwarzkopf/6000000013592537599) in Reutte in Austrian Tyrol, who played a key role indeveloping the use of Wolfram in incandescent lamps, he moved to the USA to escape Nazi persecution after Hitler occupied Austria, as did Schwarzkopf. In the USA he rapidly became involved in war work, and contributed to developing ignition systems in the Manhattan Project. After serving as Professor at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute he led the metallurgical research lab for Sylvania Electric Products in New York and then worked for the nuclear engineering division of Penn-Texas Corporation, NY. He kept his association with Schwarzkopf who had returned to Austria to run Metallwerk Plansee and edited a journal for him as well as becoming consultant and editor of the International Journal of Powder Metallurgy with his assistant Helen Friedmann for the American Powder Metallurgy Institute at Princeton.

Prof. Hausner's other main interest was classical music, and this already led him in the late 1950s to return regularly to the Austrian city of Salzburg that he so loved and set up a home there in addition to his flat on Long Island. His Salzburg home was built in typical alpine style high up on the slopes of the Kapuzinerberg overlooking the river and the city. But a couple of years after he had set up house there, his first wife Lisl died. Circumstanceswere not kind to Hausner in his married life - only six years later his second wife died. Ten years later Hausner married again, Ada Pick, and when she lay dying in 1984 she urged him to marry their close friend Lotte Sieber. whoin the end survived him by 9 years.

Hausner's love of music led him to undertake a thorough study of Mozart's and Salieri's student Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who was best known for completing and publishing Mozart's Requiem after the great composer's death. After completing his research Hausner authored the monograph "Franz Xayer Süßmayr" published by Bergland-Verlag in Wien in 1964, which became a standard work on Süssmayr.

Hausner was the youngest son of Helene and Hans, and was born ten years after his two brothers. He kept a close relation to his jewish-born but catholic mother and rushed back to Austria as soon as the war ended to try find her. Helene had been deported to Theresienstadt, where she survived by a miracle. Hausner took her back to Vienna, but could not persuade her to come with him to the USA. She never really recovered from the terror of Theresienstadt anddied two years later.
