Notes for Peter Richard Zimels
{geni:occupation} poet (songwriter)
{geni:about_me} Peter and Robert were the sons of Paula and Berman. Peter was the elder. He was ordained and practiced for 5 years as a Theravadin monk. (Buddhist) He was a member of the Grateful Dead family and wrote their song Passenger. He also wrote songs performed by Peter, Paul and Mary, and numerous other musicians. He collaged with great flair and wit. He spoke with wisdom, compassion, and humor. He loved children especially his own, Bodhi, Eva, and Genevieve (Johnny Violet). He was loved by many and is sorely missed.

I think he was most guided by Ethical Culture but because a few of his friends who had been in robes with him in Asia came at the time of his dying I deferred to Buddhist practice in the disposition of Peter's body. After an interval of 3 days Peter was cremated in a forested area on Pudding Creek in Fort Bragg, CA. Tibetan monks did Puja (prayers) there and again on the first anniversary of Peter's death. They had also come before Peter died and I saw Peter winking irreverently at Bodhi while they chanted....

Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, Bodhi svaha. (gone, gone, gone beyond gone, gone to the distant shore, hail to the one going)
