Gravestone inscription:

In a [hoarse?] voice I scream and call bitterly
Why have you left me [???] wife of my bosom?
Oh soul mate – the happiness of my heart [???]
From on high you put [???] dear and clear
To the fields of rest [???] to the land of resurrection
She has most certainly gone and I weep for that

How shall I forget you, mistress of the house – woman of valor*?
[???]
Your deeds [???]
[???] were felt day and night
To support [???] souls [???]
Your memory will never leave me forever.

*”Woman of Valor” is the name of a prayer extoling the virtues of a wife and considered the ultimate compliment. A religious man would read this prayer to his wife in the presence of their children every Friday night. It is also traditionally read graveside at a woman’s burial.
