Notes for Emil Karpeles-Schenker
{geni:about_me} Emil changed his name to Karpeles-Schenker on Aug 13, 1920 (per ''Wer Einmal War'', p. 1355). He was Seniorchef der Firma Schenker & Co. and had been made heir to the firm's owner, Gottfried Schenker (b. 14 February 1842 in Däniken, Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland, d. 26 November 1901 in Vienna; he is not yet in GENI)*. Gottfried Schenker had previously adopted another man connected with his firm (after Schenker's own son, Eduard, died in 1892 at age 20; see at http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/history2/23/SCHENKER-RHENUS-AG.html). That first adoptee was Auguste Schenker-Angerer (1866-1914); his death notice appeared in ''Neue Freie Presse'' on [http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?apm=0&a...;seite=28&zoom=2 Nov. 15, 1914].

Emil married Helene Stiassni in Brno (Mahren) on March 25, 1900 (''WEW''). They were art-collectors whose possessions were among those retained by the Nazis; this is documented in ''Was einmal war: Handbuch der enteigneten Kunstammlungen Wiens'' by Sophie Lillie (Wien, 2003; OCLC #794657485; ISBN #3707600491).

See also [http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/history2/23/SCHENKER-RHENUS-AG.html Business History for Schenker-Rhenus AG], which lists Schenker's original partners in the "freight forwarding" business -- Moritz Karpeles and [http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moritz_Hirsch Moritz Hirsch]. "At the beginning of 1872 [Gottfried Schenker] was introduced to Moritz Karpeles and Moritz Hirsch, both in their 30s and owners of a freight forwarding company. They were impressed by Schenker's plans for expanding the international forwarding business into southeastern and western Europe and for moving into sea transport via Trieste and Fiume. The three decided to start a company together, and Schenker & Co. was founded on July 1, 1872, officially incorporated at the Austro-Hungarian Commercial Court in Vienna. The starting capital was 50,000 guilders; Karpeles and Hirsch each provided 20,000, and Schenker provided 10,000. Despite his smaller share in the business Schenker was to receive 50 percent of the profits."
