{geni:about_me} Sylvia Orthof was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1932, the only child of an Austrian Jewish couple who left Vienna between the two World Wars in search of work and peace. Her immigrant parents were poor and she had a difficult childhood. She learnt to speak German first, and spoke Portuguese badly, and with an accent, until school age. At the age of 18 she went to study Drama in Paris. She returned to Brazil a year later and worked as an actressat the Teatro Brasileiro de Comédias (Brazilian Theatre of Comedies), in São Paulo, and, in Rio, performed with leading theatre and TV actors. She is a writer who is loved by many for her poetic irreverence, and has published more than 100 children’s books and books for young readers. Thirteen of her titles have been awarded the seal of ‘Highly Recommended for Children’ by the Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil (National Board of Books for Young People). Sylvia died in 1997, but to this day still exerts her influence on innumerable authors of children’s books.

Any story by Sylvia Orthof leaves you wide-eyed with fright, but not the kind of fright that makes you go weak in your knees or shiver. The fright is the fright of perplexity, our eyes opening wide within us, giving greater breadth to our thinking.



Awarded the Jabuti Prize for A Vaca Mimosa e a Mosca Zenilda (The cow Mimosa and the fly Zenilda, 1997), Sylvia had many of her works adapted for the stage. She broke down many of the stereotypes in Brazilian children’s literature, with her rebellious, neat, cheeky texts, filled with humour, provocation and frights. Sylvia Orthof’s creativity always defied any labelling. As she once commented, the classic stories in children’s literature were always written from a very male chauvinistic point of view. “No one asks Cinderella if she wants to marry the prince. Cinderella marries the prince because he has money and power. She prostitutes herself”, she said.



Besides questioning old concepts, Sylvia Orthof always lived as she wrote: entrancing people everywhere. The author of one of the greatest classics in Brazilian children’s literature, Uxa, Ora Fada, Ora Bruxa (Uxa, half fairy godmother, half witch), which, in a style all its own, shows the two sides in all of us, Sylvia was crazy about gardens and flowers. And her favourite flower was the ‘maria-sem-vergonha’ (shameless Maria, the Portuguese vulgar name for impatiens). “I love this plant. At home we have a potted one on the stairs and one in the garden. These are plants which wouldn’t bloom in the flowerbed. They’re not just Marias, they’re also ‘shameless’. Some grew in between the stones of the outside wall. It’s always like that. They grow in the most unexpected places. Then a young lad wanted to cut them away from the wall, but I reacted: - ‘Don’t do that. They struggled so much for this place”, said Sylvia, in an interview. And she added: “Gardens are like books, they need attention. But I don’t like those pristine gardens, with plants that are too well pruned. Plants, like stories, have the right to wander wherever they want”.And this is what Sylvia’s stories do, and they ramble on their way, bringing readers of all ages into bloom.



“Sylvia Orthof didn’t do a degree in Languages and was never a teacher either. Her professional roots are in the theatre and television, which made her literature extremely communicative. Sylvia thought like a child did. And a very naughty one at that. With an enviable sense of humour, she managed to write about the ambivalent feelings a child has for its mother (Uxa, Ora Fada, Ora Bruxa), as well as to write hilarious stories about people’s love for animals (Os Bichos Que Eu Tive – The animals I have had)”.

Sylvia Orthof (Petrópolis, 1932 — Petrópolis, 1997) foi uma escritora brasileiras de livros infantis.

Além de livros, escreveu muitas peças de teatro, como Eu chovo, tu choves, ele chove e " Quem roubou meu futuro".

Em 1983 ganhou o Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura.
