Notes for David SCHILMEISTER
{geni:about_me} Dave Schilmeister was born in Covington, Kentucky on July 14, 1924. Dave attended elementary and high schools in both Covington and Cincinnati, His high school activities included being a member of the business staff of the Annual, reporter, Sports Editor, Editor, and Publisher of the newspaper, and earned two letters as manager of the basketball and baseball teams. After graduating in 1941, he worked three years, and enrolled at the University of Cincinnati in the fall of 1944. After completing one year in Mechanical Engineering, he decided his interest lay in another field, and switched to Business Administration.
From an early age, he had a keen interest in photography. Writing in the November 1942 issue of Popular Photography, he stated that he would visit conventions and exhibits just before they are opened to the public as a way to make money with his camera. He always got orders for pictures from the firms exhibiting there.

While at U.C., he became the business manager of the “COOPERATIVE ENGINEER” and was a familiar figure about campus and was seldom seen without at least one camera in his possession.
A pre-junior in Business Administration, Dave was determined to come on the staff and show the engineers how the business half of a magazine should be run. He did just that, operating efficiently, and in a business- like manner. He served on the staff as photographer in 1946, but stepped into the business manager's position as if he belonged there.
In addition to his position on the magazine, Dave served as President of Men's Senate, member of Student Council, Vice-President of the Association of Independent Men, Alpha Phi Omega, Photographic Editor of the “Cincinnatian,” and a member of Glee Club. There is still some question as to whether he was in the Glee Club because he could sing, or because he could take good pictures.
Schilmeister's main interest after graduation was in the 'field' of retailing and merchandising. He began selling mens’ suits at Shillito’s after his tenure at the University of Cincinnati.

On January 25, 1948, he married Dorothy Rissover, with whom he had three children.

Not feeling satisfied in retailing, he started remodeling kitchens under the name “Better Builders” in the early 1950s. Dave decided that he really enjoyed the portion of the work that included electrical wiring, and soon changed to being solely an electrical contractor. In 1953, he morphed his business into becoming Deneal Electric Company, named after his newborn son at the suggestion of his uncle, Nathan Mayers.
Deneal Electric performed electrical installations for well-known builders and architects, among them Art Brand and Ben Dombar. The company later performed installations for industrial and commercial applications.

Dave had a lifetime interest in photography and cabinetry. He became active in the Ohio Valley Camera Club in the 1960s and 1970s as well as serving as an officer for a time. In the 1982, he was a founding member (along with hisbrother, Ben Schilmeister - a commercial artist employed at the Cincinnati Post) of the Cincinnati Woodworking Club.
